Jam of the Day | Datarock – Catcher in the Rye

Dude, the Scandinavian countries are straight tearing up my iPod so far in 2011. Hot on the tracks of Monday’s Jam of the Day, the new Lykke Li single, “I Follow Rivers,” we’ve got the new Datarock happytime dance gem, “Catcher in the Rye.” (Otherwise known as “the most extravagant single in in history”…’cause that’s what the band’s calling the 4GB USB stick that comes correct with 105 bonus tracks, 1,500 photos, 20 music videos, and 60 minutes of concert film. And then, the single).

I’ve been a fan of Norway’s Datarock for a handful of years now. Songs off 2007’s Datarock Datarock like “I Used to Dance with My Daddy” and “Fa-Fa-Fa” are perpetually prepped and ready when I need to get the par-tay started. Furthermore, the hit single off that album, “Computer Camp Love” is a tribute mash-up to Revenge of the Nerds and Grease’s “Summer Nights.” What’s not to adore?

“Catcher in the Rye” takes every element of that insane fun and pumps up the jam a few thousand more notches. Or, in whatever increment jams are typically measured.

Ironically, the track pays homage to my favorite angsty anti-hero, Holden Caufield, with a playful chorus that tongue-in-cheekly (yeah, I just made up an adverb) begs to avoid the fate of Salinger’s protagonist. Which would actually make the guys in Datarock heroes. Or something. They, at least, come to save your Wednesday.

If you don’t have Datarock Datarock, I’m gonna need you to go ahead and pick that up. Here’s a more mellow offering (and my personal favorite) to tempt you into purchase.
