Jam of the Day | Blackpool Holiday – 1945

This past Monday, I turned 33. I was feeling pretty okay about it, and then on Tuesday night, Robert Morris University upset the University of Kentucky in the first round of the NIT – and I found out that RMU coach Andy Toole was six months younger than me. Do you ever do that? It happened to me in 2003, too, when Mark Prior was pitching for the Cubs in the ’03 NLCS (even if the Cubs blew it); that moment where you see someone younger than you doing something amazing, and you’re thrown into a spiral of self-reflection and OH MY GOD WHAT AM I DOING WITH MY LIFE. I am doing plenty with my life, thanks very much, but I am not beating Kentucky on national television.

So, you know, just to put you guys in my place, the three guys who make up Maryland’s Blackpool Holiday are, in fact, teenagers. At least one of them hasn’t graduated from high school yet, I’m pretty sure. Listen to this clever, catchy indie pop song, with its distinctly retro Brit pop feel, sweet harmonies, and polished sound, and be a little jealous that Blackpool Holiday is a band this talented and clever at such a young age. I foresee great things for them.

I don’t know what they have planned in terms of releases, but I do know that they’re planning a short tour of the Southeastern US in April. Chapel Hill, you can catch them at the Cave at 7pm on April 4, and the rest of you can check out some other tracks on their ReverbNation page. Keep your eyes wide open on these guys.
