SXSW 2013 | Thirty-Three Must-See Acts

The Away Days, from Istanbul, Turkey

The music portion of SXSW kicks off Tuesday in Austin, the land where bacon and blackberry whiskey go hand in hand. Don’t ask me how I know that is true, just believe me.

If you’re going down to Texas this year, please make an effort to see the following bands/artists (You can subscribe to the playlist on Spotify here).

The Away Days
From Istanbul, Turkey, I hear touches of U2 and Explosions in the Sky. There is definitely something interesting and original going on here.

Jillette Johnson
A blossoming talent, it’s only a matter of time before we’ll see her name on festival lineups across the nation. What a voice.

Escondido
From Nashville, Jessica Maros and Tyler James have the goods to blow up very soon. Love this song.

Atlas Genius
They’re from Australia, and their name is everywhere. Find their debut, When It Was Now.

Highasakite
Well, son of a bitch! These Norwegians have the good stuff.

Haim
So, I’m a little in love with Haim. Okay, a lotta in love with Haim.

The Lone Bellow
All it takes is one listen to “You Never Need Nobody,” and then you’ll know.

Guards
I am enamored with this song.

ZZ Ward
Another can’t miss artist, immense with talent, who is bound to blow up very soon. We interviewed her last year.

Ghost Beach
I want to shake my ass to this song.

Lauren Aquilina
A huge talent from across the pond. (We regret to inform you that Lauren WILL NOT be at SXSW.)

Lucius
Since we learned of Lauren Aquilina’s cancellation,  we bring you Lucius!

Emma Louise
An indie powerhouse from Brisbane.

Goldroom
I’ll have more of this. Anytime, anywhere.

Sky Ferreira
The sky is the limit for Sky. (OMG, how cheesy was that?? Sorry, Sky.)

Haerts
They’ll break your haert. (That was even cheesier.)

Enough of the cheese.  MØ will kick your ass.

Churchill
From Denver, CO, and catchy as hell.

Née
From St. Louis, the party begins and ends here.

Lucy Rose
Let’s just take a moment and enjoy Lucy Rose’s accent.

Pokey LaFarge
Mark Twain would have loved this shit.

Hannah Georgas
Canadian musicians really are the best. Here’s more proof.

Snowden
“I thought that I could stand/ Until you showed your face again.” Yup.

Feathers
I would like to mess up my room to this song.

Young Galaxy
If only this music was around for The Legend of Zelda.

Little Boots
Close your eyes and be taken far, far away.

Blondfire
I can’t blame it all on you, either.

SUUNS
Play this one in your basement. Make sure the lights are off.

Rose Windows
Spirit warriors. Yes, they are.

The Eastern Sea
There is a lot going on here.  Trains, peace of mind, etc.

Icona Pop
Try not to get off your couch.

Water Liars
How beautiful is this? Superb songwriting.

The Staves
They can sing. But you knew that, right?

David Wax Museum
Yes. I vote yes.
