This song hurts. I mean that in the best way, I really do. But, when KDHX played it on my way to work yesterday, I wanted to turn my car around, go home, and get back under the covers. The pain contained in the “Little Bird” lyrics is palpable.
The weary voice, the absolute desolation, the reliance on nature as an only comfort… It all comprises the angst that permeates this song. But one simple line says it all: “Goddamn/ I miss that girl.” This is not merely a break-up song; this is a song about how to get out of bed every morning, how to put one foot in front of the other.
