The crowd was chanting “Lana! Lana! Lana!”
This was about 15 minutes before they even saw her face.
I had my doubts, but Lana Del Rey put on a spectacular performance, light years ahead of her SNL debacle last year. Her voice was strong and her fans were in total love her every move — singing along to every song, especially “Cola,” “Born to Die,” “Video Games,” and the closing “National Anthem.”
Before her set, Frightened Rabbit and Queens of the Stone Age played simultaneously, both playing to large, rabid crowds.
“You just have to do your best,” Frightened Rabbit’s Scott Hutchison told the crowd, trying to get them to sing. “Because in the end, that always has to be good enough.”
Earlier in the day, Houndmouth pleased a nice gathering at the BMI stage with songs like “On the Road” and “Penitentiary,” while Jessie Ware sparkled at the Petrillo stage.
All in all, a fine opening day for Lollapalooza. Please enjoy the photos (all by Jason Gonulsen).
