Concert Photos | The Gaslight Anthem at Cat’s Cradle in Chapel Hill, NC

All photos by Agatha Donkar

The Gaslight Anthem stuck with their roots last Thursday, playing to a sold-out crowd at small capacity Cat’s Cradle in a final club tour before their latest release, the upcoming Handwritten, propels them to the bigger venues that the band is clearly ready to play. They stuck with their roots in the setlist, as well, playing heavily from debut LP Sink or Swim and breakout hit, The ’59 Sound, and including only a few of the early singles from their major label debut, due out tomorrow on Mercury Records.

Gaslight carries a reputation for being a high energy, show-stopping band, and they didn’t disappoint the cheerfully rowdy crowd in Carrboro. Brian Fallon shouted, crooned, and howled, leaning his microphone over into the reaching hands of the front row, and while Alex Rosamilia smiled like a guitar playing Mona Lisa on one side of Fallon, bassist Alex Levine whirled in circles on the other. There’s no good way to pick a highlight from the set, listed below, but “Howl,” two minutes of Buddy Holly meets Social Distortion and a highlight of the stellar Handwritten, will become as much a staple of the Gaslight set as “Great Expectations.” A cover of Bob Dylan’s “Changing of the Guards” in the six song encore was shocking and gorgeous.

More photos behind the jump, and the full set of photos, including opener Dave Hause (sometimes frontman of Philadelphia punks, the Loved Ones), is available on Flickr.
